Appearance

The Odrosi are a tall, willowy species. Their skin is in shades of purple, and covered in red tribal tattoos that tell tales of their deeds. They have long faces with sloped foreheads and tiny, somewhat flat noses. Their small eyes are set wide apart, with large, dark pupils.

Odrosi are completely hairless. What appears to be hair on their heads is actually a mass of tendrils, typically green in color, but sometimes blue or yellow. These tendrils are bear very little sensation, and are primarily used to store excess fat. As a result, long tendrils are a sign of wealth and luxury in Odrosi culture.

Culture

Odrosi are a primitive, tribal people. They live in walled villages within the jungle, ever on alert for dangers posed by the environment. Their villages are ruled primarily by the tribe's Mahanur, or "Speaker" — one who is skilled in diplomacy and tact. In times of war or great danger, leadership is usually deferred to the tribe's Kadua Tobranur — the greatest warrior — though the Mahanur technically remains the highest authority. The only member of the tribe that can overrule the Mahanur is the Jodanur, or "Rememberer" — the tribe's chief historian and shaman — and then only in spiritual matters.

The Odrosi's real strength comes from their faith. They are a compassionate, spiritual people who believe in a concept they call Halau me Nur — the Light of One. To the Odrosi, individual achievement is more important than wealth, status, gender, or even the good of the many. They worship their past heroes (and place their living ones on high pedestals). To the Odrosi, great heroes are important because they can inspire their lesser to greater deeds. They believe everyone has halau, a light within. One nurtures that light and makes it brighter through heroic accomplishments. Indeed, they even believe that the stars are the homes of deceased heroes, illuminated by their halau.

Language

The native tongue of the Odrosi is Odrosi, a fluid, breathy language rife with metaphor and symbolism. Its written form is not well suited to standard documents, as it does not flow in straight lines. It developed as a means of tattooing the body with tales of great deeds. It may seem simplistic at first, but close examination of Odrosi tattoos reveals that what may appear to be a solid stroke is actually a highly detailed and full of nuance.

Names

Odrosi names are as fluid as the rest of their language. Odrosi adults often have long names that describe their deeds or natures. Most Odrosi names begin with the phrase "Nur bo", which means "The One Who…". Sometimes they can become quite lengthy, and typically an Odrosi will have a "short form" name derived from their full name. For example, Nur bo Falu esh Wataya translates to "The One Who Walks Through Fire". In short form this might be shorted to Falu'wa, which might roughly be translated as "Firewalker".

Some names can become exceptionally long as an Odrosi achieves more great deeds. For example, Nur bo Falu esh Wataya ho Tobra Sheslek Bama ho Imi Ratha Pugum means "The One Who Walks Through Fire and Slayed the Giant Sheslek and Climbed the Thundering Mountain". Though such lengthy honorifics are typically only used ceremonially, and such an Odrosi would still go by the short form, Falu'wa, in day-to-day life.

Homeworld

Odrosi appear deceptively frail, when in fact they are quite hardy, toughened by the harsh conditions of their homeworld of Odrosis. The jungle world is teeming with life, much of it highly dangerous. Even the flora is as likely to be poisonous as it is nourishing. The fauna is even more terrifying, especially the deadly sheslek — large, cunning predators that are often hunted by Odrosi warriors seeking glory.
