The daughter of a prominent shipwright, Elisenda Aguinaldo, was rather immediately seduced by an exotic pirate that came into her father's business one day trying to strike a deal for some repairs. Idaris was born a slave in the harsh lands to the north. He was of a long line of breeding for perfection, and it showed. For months they carried on their affair until his ship was finished and fully restored and his obsession with hunting down his former masters drew him from her. It was only a few days after Idaris had sailed away north that Elisenda realized that she was pregnant.

Esteban Garcez was Elisenda's father's apprentice. He had been in love with Elisenda secretly nearly since he came to be mentored when they were young. Esteban knew about the affair because he heard them aboard the dry-docked ship from his small closet of a room in the building. It broke his heart, but it broke all the more when he saw how vexed and depressed she became after Idaris left. Esteban confronted Elisenda and revealed to her his feelings and that he knew she was pregnant. He proposed marriage and she accepted. After they were married they moved across the island back to Esteban's hometown and family so that dates and histories grew foggier.

Of course, when Esterlina Garcez was born, some eyebrows quirked, as she looked very little like her adopted father. Especially with the exotic silver eyes, and fiery red undertones to her black hair that blazed like a bonfire in the sun. But he happily claimed her as his own and as Esteban was a great swordsman (who only made and repaired ships to pay the bills) the discussion and rumors ended soon after.

As it turned out, Esteban marrying a pregnant woman was good for his lineage as he himself was revealed to be sterile. It did not bother him one bit, he always raised Lina (as she insisted to be called) as his own and taught her everything he knew. Lina could tell that there was some jealousy whenever she'd ask her mother about Idaris but he always took it for Lina's sake in knowing as much about her real father as she could.

Lina was 15 when Elisenda said that she had to go bail her father's out of jail. At the tavern the night before a drunk pirate had been boasting about a beautiful woman that he had enjoyed on the island some 15 years ago, with a little heart shaped birthmark under her left breast, called Elis. Esteban's years of pent up anger and jealousy unleashed in a solid fist to the pirate's face. Esteban and Idaris spent the night arguing and talking in their cells across from each other. Idaris learned he was a father that night and in the morning Lina went with her mother to bail them out and meet her legendary father. Idaris was only in port for two days and most of the second was spent in jail! So time was short and he promised to return after the next raid, but he would not take Lina with him like she begged him to do.

When Lina went home with her mother and stepfather she started to pack her things intending on stowing away on her father's ship until they got into a position where he couldn't turn her away. Esteban unfortunately only felt further betrayed and jealous and the argued. In his anger, he told her to never come back if she walked out that door. So she stole his sword and parrying dagger in his belt, wrapped up all the belongings she could easily take that meant the most to her and snuck out to sneak aboard the ship with the last few supplies being loaded before it set sail.

Lina succeeded in keeping stowed away on the ship until they docked at Eastport. When there she snuck off only to return back to the ship in disguise as a young man wanting to work on the ship since the call went out. Lina got to learn more stories and legends about her father from the crew and from the man himself at meals and such. Her disguise was good enough to fool the father that only had seen her for a handful of hours in a dim jail cell.

There was a time that some suspicion grew on Idaris' part because of all of the questions. But the quizzing was rudely interrupted by an attack on a Kal vessel. The first attack of this voyage! Lina — or Luca as she was known then performed admirably and even saved the life of the first mate. She was in very bad shape for her heroics however and during the medical attention, she was given after they had won the battle outted her secret. There were some on the crew that felt betrayed and wanted her off, even her father was uncertain about what to do. But the First Mate came to her defense. She had done better in battle against their savage enemy than plenty of new recruits that didn't survive as long as she had. The life debt and fact that they were far from anywhere to safely drop her off, so they all voted to keep Lina aboard.

Lina and her father grew to know each other a great deal. She learned that he was half-elven and human, he had gone from being a favored slave to beaten and abused one when he was claimed by his former master's slayer. When on a 'pleasure cruise' his master's ship was pursued by pirates, driven to wreck on a reef. When the pirates boarded Idaris and the other slaves fought their masters alongside the pirates. Idaris joined the pirate crew and worked his way through the ranks.
