The Reach
game-of-thrones Logo

The Reach is one of the constituent regions of the Seven Kingdoms on the continent of Westeros. It was formerly a sovereign nation ruled by the Kings of the Reach before the War of Conquest. It is the second-largest of the kingdoms behind the north and is considered the most fertile and heavily-populated part of Westeros.

The Reach is considered the home of chivalry in Westeros. It is the place where knighthood is looked upon with the greatest reverence and esteemed the most. It is also the place where the rules for tournaments are the most stringent and managed.

The Reach is ruled from the castle of Highgarden by House Tyrell. Notable houses have included Ashford, Caswell, Crane, Florent, Fossoway, Gardener, Hightower, Merryweather, Mullendore, Oakheart, Redwyne, Rowan, Tarly, and Vyrwel. Noble bastards born in the Reach are given the surname Flowers.

House Tyrell

sigil_house-tyrell.png
Growing Strong
Standing: Great House Lands: The Reach Seat: Highgarden Political Allegiance: The Blacks sigil_the-blacks.png

The Tyrells have held dominion over the Reach since Aegon the Conqueror raised them up from their status of stewards after destroying the Gardener line at the Field of Fire. The Tyrells have proven to be just rulers, and the Reach has continued to prosper under their dominion. Of course, ruling over a region that was prosperous, to begin with, makes the task that much simpler, as some of the Reach’s other houses would likely point out.

House Tyrell of Highgarden is one of the Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms, overlords over the Reach. A large, wealthy house, its wealth is only surpassed among the Great Houses by House Lannister, and the Tyrells can field the greatest armies. Additionally, if they call the fleets of their bannermen the Redwynes, the lords of the Shield Islands, and the coastal lords, they can command a navy that equals if not surpasses the royal fleet.

The Lords of House Tyrell style themselves 'Defenders of the Marches' and 'High Marshals of the Reach', and traditionally, they have been Wardens of the South. Members of the family tend to have curly brown hair and brown or golden eyes.

House Ball is an ancient house. According to tales they descend from one of the three husbands of Florys the Fox, a daughter of Garth Greenhand. Their blazon is three white plates on a chevron red on a white field. A special feature of the area surrounding the small castle is that wind and water and time have rubbed the local stones naturally into almost perfect spheres. They are highly prized for gardens and when crops aren't doing well, the stones always bring in enough to keep the area and its noble family comfortable.

Beware Our Sting.

Standing: Minor. Seat: Honeyholt. Political Allegiance: The Blacks sigil_the-blacks.png

Honeyholt castle is located on the Honeywine River, south of Brightwater Keep, north of Oldtown, and about equidistant from them both. House Beesbury is relatively minor in status but with the Master of Coin on the Small Council being Lyman Beesbury, it's easy to guess that their monetary wealth outweighs their status.

Lyman Beesbury is in King's Landing as Master of Coin in the Small Council. An example of what happens when a House gets a little too nosey in Oldtown's Undercity! When there were rumours of Lord Mikael Beesbury being last seen on a supposed pirate ship several years back it caused Lord Corben Beesbury to investigate. Corben was getting very close to discovering where his eldest had gone off to, alas his death cut the efforts short. Corben left behind a widow, Bethally, and a young son, Corden. Then, of course, there's also Mikael Beesbury who's actually doing quite well for himself upon one of Oldtown's naval vessels. Mickey is how he's known in Oldtown. Bethally and Corben are still staying in Oldtown since the seedier side of Oldtown affairs. Usually, the house had very little interest in the activities of Oldtown. Until their heir ran off to become a pirate. Bethally cares for the city life and does still hope to find Mikael. Only then she has vowed will she return to Honeyholt. By everyone's agreeance, Lyman's wife, Agatha, who was from House Mullendore before marrying him is in charge of Honeyholt. She is a great deal younger than Lyman and is in very good health and happy to hold down the fort as it were until Corden becomes of age to take up the title. That is unless Mikael is found and returned home. Because then he would be Lord of Honeyholt.

Standing: Minor. Seat: Blackcrown Political Allegiance: The Greens sigil_the-greens.png

Blackcrown Castle and Three Towers serve as the watchtowers of Whispering Sound, with Blackcrown located on the northern shore. The current head of House Bulwer is Harrian Bulwer. The sigil of House Bulwer is the bull, bone on blood. It is not a pretty flower, or apple, or bee. It is a symbol of their strength and the length they will go to in pursuance of their duty. Their words, "Death Before Disgrace", is another stark reminder of this. The men of the house are, down to the last, meant to be knights and warriors whose swords are destined to smite their enemies and those of the Hightowers, and their shields are for the protection of their house and their liege, rather than themselves. As for the women born into this house, theirs is the traditional role of noblewomen in Westeros - it is their duty to marry well and secure alliances so that House Bulwer will always have friends both in peace and war. It has always been a point of pride that among Bulwer women, there are none willing to abandon this duty, for though they do not take up blade and shield in defense of their House and that of House Hightower, theirs is still a solemn role that is just as important and must not be shirked for any foolish notions of love or selfishness.

Sunhouse sits at the southern tip of the Reach and is a port along the Redwyne Straits. As such they serve as border protection to Oldtown from Dorne, and as a ward against raiders from the Straits.

Miranda Cuy has a very big problem. She has 15 daughters! Her husband has just died and so she has high hopes of marrying them off as quickly as possible. The hunt for at least one suitor being of the mind to become a Cuy and carry on the name is quite the task. It also doesn't help that one of the daughters is of marrying age, she is just a sickly little thing. So Miranda has the House's Maester scouring Oldtown for exotic remedies. So Haelis travels to Oldtown often in fervoured search. He's trying to learn foreign herbs and remedies to help with the illness of Lady Moraine Cuy. It is also with more frequency in which the gaggle of noblewomen come fluttering between Hightower's court in Oldtown and to Highgarden and the Tyrell's Court.

Standing: Minor. Seat: Brigthtwater Keep.

Of all the houses within the Reach, the Florents are one of the only families that strive to outdo the Tyrells when attempting to better their station through marriage. Of course, the Florents have a bit higher to climb since Mace Tyrell has dominion over the Reach, and Lord Alester Florent’s domain doesn’t extend far beyond his castle walls. This is none too pleasing to the Florents, whose blood ties to the extinct House Gardener are stronger than the Tyrells, a fact they will recite with little prompting to any who appear interested.

The Florents, like the Tyrells, claim descent from the extinct House Gardener, the defunct Kings of the Reach. Meaning to them that they have a superior line of descent and believe that they by rights should possess Highgarden.

Many a thing has been bought and sold or travelled through Oldtown from House Florent in their Brightwater Keep that is at the north end of the Honeywine River that ends in the south inside of Oldtown. Lord Harald Florent knows that goods of questionable origin can be purchased in Oldtown. Often he has an agent in the city looking for the next great find. One of his agents, Short Tom Tinker is completely in the know of how things operate, but he keeps it secret to protect his Lord and House should the secret be revealed and House Florent sullied by association. Harald also enjoys trips down the river on his pleasure yacht in good weather so he is often a visitor to Oldtown himself. Their sigil is a red-gold fox's head encircled by lapis lazuli flowers. The Hightower of Oldtown is the central point from which the rest of the city grew, and serves as both a beacon to incoming ships and as the ancestral seat to House Hightower. The family is as old and proud as the building they live in, dating all the way back to the time of the First Men. The Hightowers were kings in their own right, but they eventually chose to bend the knee to the Kings of the Reach rather than battle for supremacy. This is not unusual for the house, as they generally prefer to deal in trade goods instead of cold steel, and pledging fealty to the lords of the Reach has not prevented them from continuing their commerce.
In addition to being instrumental in making Oldtown a center of trade, the Hightowers were also responsible for making the city known for its learning and religious tolerance, for it was due to their initiative that the Citadel was established and the Starry Sept and numerous smaller temples to other faiths were allowed to flourish. Since they are known for eschewing combat, it is little surprise the Hightowers are themselves enamored of both learning and the Faith, though there have been some family members who have dabbled in the knightly arts.
While the size of their dominion has shrunk with the passage of time, the history of Westeros is littered with the names of Hightowers who have left their indelible mark in both good and bad ways. Some Hightowers are said to have dabbled in alchemy and necromancy.

Standing: Minor. Seat: Uplands. Political Allegiance: The Blacks sigil_the-blacks.png

House Mullendore of Uplands is a noble house from the Reach. Their seat, Uplands, is located east of Oldtown and west of the Red Mountains, along a river which flows west to the Honeywine. They are sworn to the Hightowers. However when push comes to shove they side with the Blacks. Their arms depict a field of black-and-orange butterflies strewn over white. This house's lands are located in or very close to the Dornish Marches of the Red Mountains that separate the Reach from Dorne. Dornish culture is one of raiding to prove worthy to the nobility, so it is these houses that have hostile interactions with Dorne the most frequently. They are said to be close to house Beesbury through marriage ties and mutual friendship.

Out of darkness, we bring light.
Standing: Minor.

House Norridge is a noble house from the Reach. They blazon their arms with a flight of flaming arrows rising bendwise on a blue field. It is said that House Norridge got its crest when some Ironborn made it all the way up the Mander and had plan to turn about in the Blueburn after pillaging Grassy Vale. Lord Norridge and his son succeeded where the rest of the Reach along the Mander failed. In the dead of night when the Iron born were going to strike did the Lord and the Heir shot 5 fire arrows into the darkness and guided by the gods themselves some say, each struck true and set the five remaining boats alight. The gathered forces of the Reach were then able to fight in the light of the burning ships and were finally victorious against the raiders.
