James Edward Putnam, the son of James Baker Putnam and Climena Mae Stanley, was born 17 February 1843. He enlisted in the 12th U. S. Infantry on 25 September 1861 at the age of 18. His brother, Captain Henry Roscoe Putnam, signed the enlistment paper as “Recruiting Officer”. Because he was only 18 years of age, his father [James Baker Putnam] signed the enlistment paper giving permission for his young son to go off to war.

He served as First Sergeant of Company F, 12th U. S. Infantry, at Fort Hamilton, New York for nearly two years. His brother, Captain H. R. Putnam was also assigned to Fort Hamilton at that time. On 15 August 1863, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. One of the letters of recommendation for his commission says, “Sergeant Putnam is twenty years of age, of fine personal appearance, gentlemanly and his character is exceptional.”

In September of 1863, one month after he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, his unit was transferred to 5th Corps, Army of the Potomoc, where he commanded a company during the Battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania in Virginia in May of 1864. He was given a battlefield promotion to Brevet Captain on 5 May 1864 during the Battle of the Wilderness.

Like his brother, Major H. R. Putnam, James Edward Putnam stayed in the army after the Civil War. He was stationed in Springfield, Illinois, and Angel Island, California. Both he and his brother, Major H. R. Putnam, served at Fort Hall, Idaho (near Blackfoot, Idaho) in the early 1870’s. He and his brother constructed the second Fort Hall near Blackfoot (the first Fort Hall was abandoned).
