Darren Conrad
Portrait of Darren Conrad
Portrayed by Abraham Benrubi
Name: Darren Conrad
Heritage: American
Birthplace: Santa Fe, New Mexico
Occupation: Bounty Hunter
Affiliation: Himself

Darren is ugly… damn ugly. But that doesn't stop him from getting his man. Operating out of Arizona and New Mexico as a bounty hunter, he's caught his fair share of outlaws and fugitives. He's always gone to where the money is and never looking further than his next bounty. Through his travels in unfamiliar Apache territory, he received assistance from a young Apache trailguide named Johnny Firehorse. His grasp of English was good enough for them to get along and he paid Johnny for his trouble.

Darren quickly found he had never truly had a friend before he and Johnny became companions, even though he and Johnny came from completely different cultures with different languages. Johnny didn't care that he was ugly, they both just cared about the open land and finding their quarry. Darren had always been lonely though he didn't realize that was what it was called until Johnny became his friend.

Johnny's Death

After Johnny died from the giant crow, he grieved in his own personal silent way. He had lost his best and only friend. They had traveled together for a few years and now he was slain by a giant monstrous crow. The reporter Lady Wild and Professor Lazarus seemed to appreciate Johnny, but they didn't know what he truly meant to Darren. He meant acceptance by another and friendship for someone who never had a friend. Darren now carries Johnny's tomahawk in honor of their friendship and in memory of the man who meant everything to him.

Lady Wilde

Lady Wilde

She has ambition, but she tends to think of satisfying her curiosity before thinking about how it will affect others. I can forgive her for shooting me; heck, there are plenty of people who have put buck shot into my fat ass. It's the manipulation of my good will that makes it hard for me to trust her. Though, I never want to lose another friend.

Handsome Pete

Handsome Pete

Pete's got an axe to grind I guess. He seems to take the most violent solution he can. He's good with his six-guns, but he seems to be itchin' for a fight. Mix that with his laudanum problem and I don't think he's quite all there. The death of that spider-demon-thingy I thought might break him of his problems, but I guess it's more physical than mental. Maybe settling down in Tombstone will help him break that habit… Of course there's always another person for him to fight there.

Professor Lazarus

Professor Lazarus

Lazarus is a pretty good man. Always making his concoctions and fast talkin' his way past trouble. I hope he's alright living in Tombstone the last six months seemingly abandoned by his friends. I'm worried the Cowboys might have tried to take advantage of him. If that's the case, then they'll have a fight on their hands when I get back to town.

Petunia Harmon

Petunia Harmon

I miss her. She saw past my ugliness and fat to see something no one else does: my heart. She can see the child I once was and the pain I went through in order to become who I am. No one knows this pain as I keep it hidden, but Petunia can see. She loves me, I'm sure. I think she knows that I love her. I don't want to lose her.

Curly Bill Brocius

Curly Bill Brocius

Curly Bill tried to bribe me? I don't quite remember what it was, I just remember he wanted me to look the other way in his dealings. Sure, I'll look away until it becomes illegal and someone wants me to hogtie him back to town. I think that he thinks that I'm the law. I ain't the law. I'm the law's fist.

Racial Benefits and Drawbacks

  • Adaptive: Humans receive an extra Edge during character creation.

Hindrance Type Description
Obese Minor An Obese character adds 1 to Toughness, but Pace is decreased by 1 and running die is a d4. Obese characters may also have difficulty finding armor or clothing that fits, squeezing into tight spaces, or even riding in confined spaces such as coach airplane seats or compact cars.
Ugly Minor Unfortunately, this individual hit more than a few ugly sticks on the way down the tree of life. Charisma is lowered by 2, and the character is generally shunned by members of the opposite sex.
Habit Minor Darren got hooked on tobacco at an early age, trying to be like the other kids. They still didn't want him around. Now he's stuck on the chew.. This habit isn't dangerous, but it irritates others, imposing a –1 Charisma.
Phobia Minor The character has an overwhelming and irrational fear of being underground. Doctor Higgenbottom did something to him at New Tomorrie. Now Darren won't go underground for no good reason. It's creepy down there. Whenever this character is in the presence of the phobia, subtract 2 from all Trait tests.
Loyal Minor Loyal characters would give their lives for their friends. They can never leave a man behind if there’s any chance at all they could help.

Edge Type Description
Alertness Background This character is very observant and perceptive, and adds +2 to Notice rolls to hear, see, or otherwise sense the world around.
Dodge Combat Unless the victim of a surprise attack and taken completely unaware, subtract 1 from attackers' ranged attack rolls when targeting the character (even in close combat). Characters who attempt to evade area effect attacks may add +1 to their Agility roll as well (when allowed).
Improved Dodge Combat As Dodge but attackers subtract 2 from their attack rolls, and the character adds +2 to evade area effect weapons when allowed.
First Strike Combat Once per turn the character (if not Shaken) gets a free Fighting attack against a single foe who moves adjacent. This interrupts the opponent’s action and does not cost the character's action this round.
Frenzy Combat Frenzied fighters make an extra Fighting attack per round at a –2 penalty to all Fighting rolls. This attack must be taken at the same time as another Fighting attack though it may target any two foes adjacent to the hero (Wild Cards roll two Fighting dice and one Wild Die). The –2 penalty is subtracted from all attacks.
Improved Frenzy Combat As Frenzy but the character may ignore the –2 Frenzy penalty.
