Description

Fae Mien

A handsome man of forty, with long black hair streaked with gray, and a sharp beard. In his mortal seeming, he is typically dressed well, but casually, favoring turtleneck sweaters and simple slacks. In his fae mien, he is almost never without his armor.

Mortal Seeming

In his mortal seeming, he is typically dressed well, but casually, favoring turtleneck sweaters and simple slacks. In his fae mien, he is almost never without his armor.

Personality

Distant, but not unavailable. He still desperately wants to cling to the ideals of knighthood, but reality has painted him a different picture. Still, those childhood stories have never fully left him, and he will do all he can to pass on that sense of wonder to the next generation.

Background

Jason Carroll was born a few hundred years after his time. All of his childhood he fantasized about being Robin Hood, Gilgamesh, Ali Baba, and Perseus. But his favorite of them all was Sir Lancelot. He idolized the invincible warrior who destroyed himself in the name of love.

He wanted to live the life of a fighting man. He had so romanticized it in his head that he never fully realized the harsh realities of war.

Jason studied tactics and warfare all of his young life. He attended the Britannia Royal Naval College at Dartmouth and graduated with honors. After two years in the Navy, he qualified for the Special Boat Service. Twelve months of special training later, he was already on assignment in Iran.

The mission was simple. Locate a government-supported terrorist stockpile and blow it to kingdom come. Things didn’t go according to plan. In the last moments of battle, someone screamed something about a traitor. The ambush was quick, brutal, and totally unexpected. Seven men died that day, including Jason’s best friend, Christian.

Jason was the only survivor. Unfortunately for him — or so he though at the time — the enemy takes prisoners. Not that he had time to notice. The emotional trauma of watching his unit die had triggered his Chrysalis. He thought he was going mad, or that the Iranians had drugged him. The terrorists were beginning to wonder the same thing — all but one of them; an Unseelie eshu of House Scathach.

Knight Sahid recognized Jason for what he was. Despite his revolutionary tendencies, Sahid saw it as his duty to bring this errant sidhe before the duke. So he arranged for the prisoner to be placed in his care and removed him.

Jason, now called Vashen, spent the next several years under Sahid’s care and tutelage. He even found himself sympathizing a bit for his cause. Vashen knew he couldn’t return to the military. So when he came back to the States, it was under a false identity Sahid had created for him.

His faith shaken, Vashen found a new ideal of heroism in House Scathach. He excelled at swordplay, gaining great favor in the House. He never sought any title greater than knight, though. His place was to serve as a warrior of the land; and he always knew that someday he would pass on the hope that had been given to him to someone else with a broken spirit.

She is the embodiment of nobility through action, not birth. I swore that I would never again serve a heartless master. I've never met anyone with so much heart as that which beats in my Lady's bosom.

Merits & Flaws

Iron Will 3 pt. Merit Your determination and stubbornness makes you unshakable once your mind is set. Mind-altering magic against you is at +3 difficulty, up to a maximum difficulty of 9. This Merit does not affect powers dealing with emotions.
Guilt-Wracked 4 pt. Flaw You are burdened with guilt in every waking hour for your failure in the operation that led to your SBS team's deaths.. Whenever you’re presented with a situation similar to your crime, you must make a Composure + Resolve roll (difficulty 8) to remain composed. Failure results in a breakdown for the remainder of the scene, rendering most tasks impossible and increasing the difficulty of all rolls by three. Even with a success, your body reacts nervously and the difficulty of all rolls increases by one as you attempt to conceal your guilt. Few will be sympathetic should your guilt become known.

Birthrights & Frailty

glyph_kith_sidhe-autumn.png
Unearthly Beauty Birthright Sidhe gain two additional dots of Presence, even if this brings that rating above 5. When they invoke the Wyrd (Changeling: The Dreaming, p. 259), this beauty becomes over-powering. If a sidhe invokes the Wyrd in the presence of a character, the player must roll Composure + Resolve (difficulty 8). If that roll fails, the character can only stare in awestruck wonder at the sidhe for one turn for each dot of the sidhe’s Presence.
Noble Bearing Birthright Sidhe carry a quiet dignity at all times. Cantrips designed to humiliate them or make them look foolish automatically fail (that does not prevent cantrips from harming them, of course, they just don’t lose their poise when it happens). Sidhe cannot botch Etiquette or Politics rolls.
Adoration Frailty Autumn sidhe are better with mortals than their Arcadian cousins, but that carries problems of its own. Any time an Autumn sidhe successfully enchants or even meaningfully interacts with a mortal (successful use of Intimidation, Expression, Leadership, etc.), the Storyteller should roll the mortal’s Willpower against a difficulty of the sidhe’s Glamour rating. Failure means that the mortal takes an extra interest in the sidhe, which can manifest as anything from persistently offering favors or discounts to asking personal questions or sharing unwelcome confidences, or even asking for pictures or autographs. It also means the mortal has no trouble remembering every word and detail of the interaction, which can be a problem for sidhe trying to remain inconspicuous. A botch on the roll indicates the mortal either develops an unhealthy fascination with the sidhe in the case of a positive interaction, or an obsessive hatred in response to a negative one.

House Boon & Flaw

crest_house-scathach.png
House Scathach Boon The Gray Walkers excel at all forms of close combat, and seem to have a preternatural skill at going unnoticed. They make no sound when fighting unless they choose to do so, and receive a –1 difficulty on all Stealth rolls. A Scathach can never botch a Stealth roll. In addition, due to their intense combat focus, all Gray Walkers receive +1 die on all Brawl and Melee rolls, as their perception of time seems to slow down, making it easy to land hits and avoid return strikes.
House Scathach Flaw

All Scathach suffer from a bad reputation with most of their fellow nobles, as well as commoners with royalist sympathies. All Social rolls with other nobles or royalist commoners are made at a +2 difficulty; nobles from houses Liam and Danaan are exempt from this rule.

By ancient pact, Gray Walkers who are Autumn sidhe or members of other kiths are also forbidden to use Sovereign, a ban backed by the full weight of the Dreaming. In general, known Scathach are typically the first investigated if notable thefts or deaths occur among the nobility, particularly if it appears to be a sophisticated or polished job.
