Description

Fae Mien

While most nockers are grotesque, this one's exaggerated features work to her advantage, accentuating her full lips, slender waist, and impressive bust. Her skin is a patterned mix of ruddy red and chalk white, with the usual clown-like coloration of the face. Her hair is white and wild, pushed back from her face in a mane of long, feathery locks.

She dresses with a steampunk aesthetic, favoring brown leathers and pieces of clockwork. Her black and brown striped trousers fit her legs like they were painted on, disappearing into black leather lace-up boots with thick soles. She wears a tool belt rife with pouches low around around her hips. From there up to her bosom is bare, showing off her narrow waist and belly. A frilly, white blouse is parted wide, baring her bountiful cleavage, where a cameo pendant hangs. Over the blouse is a brown leather half-jacket. A pair of goggles is usually pushed up to her forehead, keeping her wild hair out of her face.

Mortal Seeming

This striking beauty bears an alabaster complexion and long, silky, raven black hair. Her eyes are a startlingly bright orange, and in the right light almost seem to smolder like embers. Below an elongated nose sits a pair of full, pouty lips. She is five feet, seven inches with long, shapely legs. Though slender of waist, her voluptuous form is quite curvaceous, with rounded hips and large breasts.

Personality

Sophies puts the "punk" in steampunk. Rebellious, often cantankerous, with a devil-may-care smirk on her lips, she struts through life with confidence and pride. She is all too aware of her own sex appeal, and flaunts it constantly, perfectly willing to use it to get what she needs.

Above all else, Sophie is an artist. She is never happier than when she has a welding torch in hand, bringing some new sculpture or costume piece to life.

Background

Sophia Strauss was a difficult child. Even as a toddler, she was defiantly independent. Mostly, this seemed to stem from an insatiable curiosity about everything, so her parents gave her considerable latitude and indulged her desires. As a result, Sophia's childhood was largely without restrictions. This could make her challenging at times, particularly when she couldn't have her way. To little Sophie, her tantrums were the only way she could get her parents to understand just how important it was that she dismantle the oven. How else was she supposed to find the fire inside and see where it went when they turned the appliance off?

Sophie_seeming_03.jpg

Sophie was fascinated with how every device worked, but was always particularly drawn to those that generated heat and flame. Some of her only peaceful moments with her family were those spent around the fireplace or on camping trips, when she was gaze for hours into the fire, enthralled by its volatile dance.

The attraction to fire began to worry Sophie's parents. When they caught her lighting fires in the garbage can in her bedroom, even burning old toys and clothes "because the fire was hungry", they placed her in counseling. The psychiatrist she saw placed the blame squarely on the lack of boundaries Sophie had been given, which soon led to a much more restrictive lifestyle. Sophie did not respond well. The psychiatrist, an Autumn Person, became a horribly banal influence in the girl's life. It was fortunate for Sophie that she had such a strong independent streak, and that she was so clever. She learned to play along with what her parents and the doctor wanted, keeping her pyrotechnical experimentation more subtle. She focused on art, which her parents decided was a healthy means of expression, despite the psychiatrist's warnings about what too much free expression can lead to.

As Sophie came to the middle of her teenage years, she began to reestablish her agency. While she wasn't lighting fires in her bedroom, she was rebelling and acting out in other ways. She discovered sex, experimented with drugs, and got involved in anti-corporate and anti-establishment protests. During this time she delved deeper into her art, and discovered the world of metalworking. The raw, primal feel of sculpting metal into new forms and shapes ignited something inside her. Once again, she was playing with fire, this time using it to create, rather than just to destroy. Her parents worried, but they had grown exhausted of trying to restrain their willful child.

Some of Sophie's metal sculptures caught the attention of people in the local steampunk scene, and a few commissions came her way for special costume pieces. Sophie had never seen anything like these Victorian-esque people bedecked in brass, gears, and pressure gauges. She was instantly enamored. Her style changed practically overnight, and she spent every moment she could at one steampunk gathering or another.

At these events, Sophie literally felt as if she were stepping into another world. There wasn't just this imaginative clothing and technology all around, there was magic. All the brass gleamed like gold in the sunlight. Every hiss of steam was like music. She marveled at how the homemade steam-gun props actually fired some kind of harmless visual effects. It wasn't until she got strange looks for having a conversation with a steam automaton prop (which was definitely talking back to her) that she began to realize that she was the only one seeing these things. Was the shrink right about her? Had she finally lost her mind?

Overcome with anxiety, Sophie retreated to her tools and the only thing she knew that could bring her comfort: fire and metal. Welding torch in hand, she threw herself into a new piece. For days she toiled, experimented, and refined. When she finally emerged, it wasn't just another costume piece she had created. The device strapped to her back roar and breathed fire as it lifted her up, rocketing into the sky! For a few minutes, she was truly free, reveling in the glory and glamour of her creation…until a helicopter pilot saw her, and his disbelief caused the rocket pack to sputter and die. Suddenly, she was plummeting toward the ground!

Thankfully, the pilot wasn't the only one that saw Sophie's maiden flight. A boggan grump was feeding pigeons on a rooftop and witnessed her rise and fall. Being skilled in the Art of Legerdemain, the boggan cast a cantrip to slow Sophie's descent and bring her safely to the roof. He introduced himself as "Uncle Abe" and complimented her marvelous creation. The kindly boggan helped her through the final stages of her Dream Dance, and eventually invited her to his home, Stinkleburrow, while she came to terms with her new life as a nocker.

Sophie became a frequent guest at Stinkleburrow, and while she never officially moved in, she was often considered one of Abe's foster children. Even when she isn't around, her presence can be felt in the various half-finished projects and components found around the property.

Not Really My Uncle

Guess I'd be a greasy, crimson stain on the sidewalk if not for Abe. That little fucker plucked me out of the air when fate had run out of fucks for me. He turned out to be a pretty stand-up boggan, lettin' me use his place for workshop space and a crash-pad now and then. Plus, he's the hookup for beer…as long as you like his beer.

Merits & Flaws

Mechanical Aptitude 1 pt. Merit You are naturally adept with all kinds of mechanical devices. The difficulties of all dice rolls to understand, repair, or operate any kind of mechanical device are reduced by two. This Merit doesn’t help you drive. This Merit affects your aptitude with chimerical mechanical objects as well as the mundane.
Sex Appeal 3 pt. Merit Your sexiness and sensuality attracts lovers to you like moths to a flame. You are the irresistible center of attention at any gathering. All rolls where sexual attraction matters have the difficulty reduced by three. This Merit cannot be used to seduce someone lacking a baseline of sexual attraction to the character.
Curiosity 2 pt. Flaw You’re curiosity often overrides your common sense. To resist temptation, roll Composure + Resolve. The difficulty varies based on the temptation; difficulty 5 for simple things like, “I wonder what’s in the armoire,” but difficulty 9 for things like, “I wonder why young men keep going missing around that hotel. I’ll just slip in and check it out.”
Changeling’s Eyes 1 pt. Flaw Your eyes are smoldering orange. This is a sign you are a changeling, recognizable to those who know the ancient lore.

Birthrights & Frailty

glyph_kith_nockers.png
Make It Work Birthright

Nockers are masters of whipping up items on demand with little more than random materials, some Glamour, and a highly cinematic and honestly self-serving appreciation of “science.” A nocker can improvise all manner of temporary, but useful, chimerical items from apparently improbable materials, such as creating a crude firearm with little more than a light bulb, a water pistol, and a handful of nails. Such items require an Intelligence + Crafts roll, with a variable difficulty, and cost between one and three points of Glamour depending on the materials available as well as the complexity of the item.

A nocker must have some degree of privacy when working on chimerical items. Kithain can be present, as long they do not disturb the nocker, but chimerical materials cannot be worked in the presence of mortals.

Fix-It Birthright Nockers can fix just about anything, chimerical or mundane. Sometimes all it takes is a kick and a few harsh words to scare a machine into working again. To fix a device the nocker’s player must make a successful Intelligence + Crafts or Manipulation + Intimidation roll. The difficulty can range from 5 (for a simple problem in a simple device) to 9 (for a difficulty problem in a complex machine).
Perfect Is the Enemy of Done Frailty Nockers strive for perfection in everything they make, and yet they can never succeed. No matter how many successes a nocker rolls when creating something, it always has a minor (but irreparable) flaw. Whenever a nocker-made device is used in a stressful situation the Storyteller can ask the player to roll one die. If the die shows “1,” the device fails or breaks in a particularly spectacular fashion.
