Description

Fae Mien

In his fae mien, Galdur doesn’t gain much more muscle (at least visibly), but he gains about a foot in height to stand around 7' 8". His skin is barely blue, many say that it’s almost gray, matching his storm-cloud colored eyes. Thick, ridged horns protrude from his bald head. A braided white beard, still streaked with fiery red, crowns his chin. He typically wears nothing but an old Scottish kilt. His bare arms and back are covered in tattoos that look something like a cross between Celtic knotwork and Nordic runes. He is never seen with a weapon.

Mortal Seeming

A mountain of a man. In his mortal seeming Galdur stands about 6’ 8”, and weighs around 375 lb., all muscle. A bodybuilder, his muscle is toned and rock-hard, even at his old age of 51.

Personality

Grim, gruff, and somber most of the time. He is often lost in thoughts of his past and feelings of regret. Every once in a while, though, he looks at his duchess and he is inspired. She fills him with life and joy, and for a few hours he is carefree and jovial. He isn't in love with her, he's pretty sure of that…he's just found a liege worth devoting himself to. Maybe it’s the troll in him, but it makes him feel complete.

Background

Galdur Stonefist is known as one of the most devoted of Amaltheia’s subjects. He is honorable, noble, and loyal to a fault. In other words, he is the definitive troll.

But this giant wasn't always the paladin he is now. Once upon a time he was a rebellious, anti-establishment terrorist. In short, he was a Ranter.

Galdur was an arms provider for the Ranters. His skills at crafting weapons are matched by few. Not only did he arm the Ranters, he ran with them. He was personally responsible for the deaths of twelve nobles. It was during one of these attacks that fate struck.

The daughter of a baron found Galdur, bloody sword in hand, standing over her father’s body. So grief-stricken was she that she cursed the troll. She laid a powerful geas upon him; that he must never again pick up a weapon, lest he perish by its stroke.

Feeling the power of the geas overwhelm him, Galdur immediately dropped the sword and fled. He didn’t return to his Ranter cell. His usefulness to them had passed, for he could never smith again, or it might be the death of him.

He wandered aimlessly from kingdom to kingdom, fearful of being recognized and being unable to defend himself. Finally he had resigned himself to misery. Rather than pass quietly into Banality, he wished to die gloriously. He began challenging every sidhe he met. He would meet them barehanded against their blades, believing they would make short work of him. But his natural strength and endurance would inevitably triumph.

It wasn’t until he encountered a warrior of House Scathach that his quest ended, but not in death. The battle was long and furious, and both combatants suffered grave wounds. But finally, the Scathach’s skill with the blade proved to be just enough to overcome the giant. But so impressed was the knight, who had never been beaten, that he could not bring himself to slay his foe. He offered Galdur mercy, saying that to destroy such a warrior would be to tarnish a work of art.

Galdur, uncertain what to think of this, accepted. If nothing else, he wanted to see what the knight had in mind. The sidhe, Sir Vashen Swiftblade, insisted that Galdur travel with him. During their journeys, Galdur came to trust Vashen, and eventually told him his story. Though felt sympathy for the fallen troll. He promised that if Galdur vowed to change his ways, that he would help him find a new life.

Galdur’s growth was a long and arduous process. But with Vashen’s help he was able to find the good in sidhe, and even came to believe in helping the aristocracy to grow, rather than try to tear it down. In time he found himself in the Big Easy, working as a professional boxer and wrestler in a local circuit. When another troll insulted the ruling baroness, Galdur challenged him. The two met in the ring, but only Galdur was able to walk out.

For his valor, the baroness praised Galdur and made him a part of her honor guard. Once again reunited with Vashen, Galdur has found a new home and a new quest. Though still wrestling with the mistakes of his past, now he feels that he has a future to look forward to.

Merits & Flaws

Huge Size 4 pt. Merit You are abnormally large in size. Aside from making you extremely noticeable in public, this extra mass increases your Size by 1, thereby gaining a dot of Health. Characters with this Merit may also gain bonuses to push objects, open barred doors, avoid being knocked down, etc.
Increased Pain Threshold 3 pt. Merit You feel pain as much as others; it just doesn’t affect you to the same degree. Legends are rife with tales of heroes who fight on, even while mortally wounded, only collapsing into death once the battle is won. The dice penalty for each of your Health Levels is reduced by one level.
Blessing of Atlas 5 pt. Merit The Blessing of Atlas permanently raises your Strength by one, and raises the potential maximum Strength rating by one. You’re only slightly larger than your fellows, but defined as if carved of marble. Should it become known by others you possess this Merit, you’ll be expected to act the hero or be feared as a budding warlord.
Geas 4 pt. Flaw You are under a geas at the beginning of play. You must never pick up a weapon, lest you die by its stroke.
Dark Secret 1 pt. Flaw You are a former Ranter. If uncovered, this would be of immense embarrassment and make you a pariah among your peers. While this secret weighs on your mind at all times, it will only surface in occasional stories.

Birthrights & Frailty

glyph_kith_trolls.png
Titan’s Power Birthright Trolls are naturally large and start at +1 to Size (childlings are Size 5, adults are Size 6), thereby gaining an extra dot of Health. A troll grows most in power when they’re out fulfilling their duties. A troll gains a dot of Strength when they take up their first oath, even if that takes the Trait above 5. Upon their second oath, the troll gains a second extra dot of strength and an extra dot of Health. See p. 264 for more on oaths.
Strong of Will and Body Birthright When a troll is at her duty, nothing can stand in her way. A troll gets an extra two dice to rolls to resist being seduced, persuaded, or even magically commanded away from her cause. Trolls also cannot botch Athletics or Alertness rolls.
Bond of Duty Frailty A troll’s integrity is as much a part of her as her strength of arms. Should a troll break an oath or sworn contract, she loses her Titan’s Power Birthright and begins to sicken. The only way to regain her strength and vitality is to atone for her broken promise, which can involve fulfilling a new oath or making restitution to the aggrieved party. Because of how integral a troll’s word is to her very being, a troll chooses her oaths — and those to whom she becomes oathbound — very carefully. Should a troll be betrayed, the player must roll Composure + Resolve (difficulty 8) to restrain the troll’s rage. Should she fail, the troll attacks the betrayers until restrained by others or the player succeeds at another Composure + Resolve roll (difficulty 8); she can attempt this roll after a number of turns equal to the troll’s Glamour.
